Dock Selection

Docks provide direct access from the land to the sea and are typically constructed to, provide access to the water or a boat. Most boat owners may see a dock as simply a method to moor their boat, but a properly designed and constructed dock can offer years of use and protection for both the boat and waterfront property. There are several types of docks available so when considering what type is best for your waterfront property several factors play a key role in the selection. One key factor when selecting a dock is if there are wide fluctuating water tables. Another key factor is always the cost and expense of the dock design and construction. Docks are available in fixed or in a floating configuration and can be constructed of wood, concrete, or a synthetic material. Docks can be accented with lighting, and other features making them a useful, pleasant architectural and visually pleasing feature for any home or business.

Fixed Dock

A fixed dock is a dock constructed of wood, concrete or synthetic material and the supporting pilings are installed into the seabed below the water table. The dock is comprised of structural beams referred to as stringers and cross braces referred to as yolks. On top of the stringers are the deck boards that provide both structural support and a finished platform that allows access and serviceability. All hardware utilized on a fixed dock is either 316 stainless steel or hot dipped galvanize stainless steel to offer years of service and withstand the elements. A fixed dock does not travel up and down when the water levels change giving it the name of “Fixed”. Fixed docks are very common along waterfront properties, canals, lakes, and waterways and are one of the more cost-effective docks that can be constructed. PMC has years of experience designing, permitting, and constructing fixed docks.

Floating Docks

Floating docks are solid platforms attached to the buoyant floating device, allowing the dock to travel up and down as water elevations change. Typically Floating docks are made of wood, concrete, or synthetic material. The float system is either plastic, a foam core concrete, or inflatable vinyl material. A traditional floating dock connected to the land and the ramp will adjust and pivot as the dock rises or falls. For commercial marina applications, attached to floating docks are concrete or wood piling with travel rollers that allow them to move up and down together smoothly, so the entire marina docks move freely to safeguard the boats. Floating docks provide an excellent solution for high fluctuating water levels or where docks are susceptible to a higher-than-normal tidal surge or wave actions.
